On February 15, 2025, in true Pittsburgh fashion, a group of devoted soccer players braved the freezing temperatures and a snow-covered pitch at Riverview Soccer Field for a game that was about much more than just the sport. Hosted by Tartan Devils Football Club, the Tartan Devils Winter Classic was a testament to the power of soccer to bring people together for a good cause.

Despite the icy conditions, spirits were high as players laced up their boots for a friendly pick-up match aimed at raising funds for Open Field, a nonprofit organization dedicated to using soccer as a tool for youth development and social impact. The event successfully raised over $2,000, thanks to the generosity of those who participated, contributed, and donated through raffles supported by Mike’s Beer Bar and Trace Brewing.
Tartan Devils FC, a core member of the Greater Pittsburgh Soccer League (GPSL) and one of the largest adult soccer clubs in PA West, has long been a dominant force on the field, competing across multiple divisions from Over-19s to Over-50s. But their commitment to soccer extends beyond competition—they also give back to the community, using the game they love to make a difference.
Open Field has been transforming lives through soccer since 2010, providing youth with opportunities for growth, leadership, and mentorship. By integrating life skills and a healing-centered, trauma-informed approach into their programs, Open Field empowers young people both on and off the field.
The Tartan Devils Winter Classic was a perfect reflection of what makes Pittsburgh’s soccer community special—passion, resilience, and generosity. And if you didn’t get a chance to contribute, there’s still time to boost the total! Donations can be made via Venmo to @Tartan-Devils.
Big thanks to all who played, donated, and supported this incredible effort. See you on the field next time—rain, shine, or snow!
